Mesa Verde

Discovered by ranchers in the late 19th century, Mesa Verde brought cliff dwellings to the imagination and fascination of the American public. Located on several distinct ‘finger’ mesas that are connected to each other at an altitude of around 9000 feet, these cliff dwellings were once considered to be houses of refuge during intertribal conflict in the late 900’s. More recent studies have revised that assessment and now consider these sites to have been monastic retreats for the hundreds of thousands of Anasazi that lived north of here in the Montezuma River basin.
